01 / OVERVIEW
About Maze Muncher
Maze Muncher is an original browser maze-chase game about reading four distinct pursuers, planning turns before each junction, and saving a power cell for the moment it matters. A run begins with two chasers and builds to four across six rotating mazes. The target run length is three to five minutes, capturing the pressure of an arcade chase while making every enemy rule visible and learnable.
02 / HOW TO PLAY
How to play Maze Muncher
- 01
Steer with the arrow keys, WASD, or by swiping anywhere on the play field. Walking into a wall stops you but keeps your heading.
- 02
Clear every pip in the maze to finish the level. Each one is 10 points, and finishing pays another 100 for every life you still have.
- 03
Running over a power cell banks it. You can hold one at a time, and it scores nothing until you use it.
- 04
Press Space, K, or tap the play field to set it off: chasers turn around and slow down, and eating them scores 200, 400, 800 then 1600.
- 05
Touching a chaser that is not frightened costs a life. You respawn with about two seconds of grace, keep the pips you ate and the cell you carried, and the run ends at zero lives.
03 / RULES
Maze Muncher rules
The maze is 19 columns by 25 rows, and the passage across its middle wraps: leave by the left edge and you come back in on the right. A chaser that follows you through is slowed for a while afterwards and you are not, which makes it the most reliable way to shake one off. Each chaser has a one-line rule: the tracker walks straight at you, the cutter aims four tiles ahead of you, the flanker aims four tiles behind you — turn around and you run into it — and the drifter chases while it is more than eight tiles away but backs off once it is closer. They alternate between patrolling and hunting, and every chaser turns around on the tick the phase flips — that reversal is your warning. The power cell is where this game parts company with the old rule set: it is banked rather than spent on pickup, it survives both a level change and a death, and the combo ladder resets on every blast, so hoarding two and alternating them scores less than one well-timed blast.
04 / STRATEGY
Maze Muncher strategy tips
Never race a chaser down a straight. Their speed stays below yours for the whole run, but eating a line of pips keeps interrupting you, so the distance comes from cornering: turn tight at junctions and run loops rather than out-running them. Hold the power cell until two or three chasers share a corridor: one blast that eats four is 3000 points, while two blasts of two are worth 1200. Learn the phases — during a patrol leg the chasers scatter to their corners, and that is when to clear the far edges of the board. When they all turn around at once, the hunt is on. Ducking through the middle passage buys you a few seconds because whoever follows comes out slowed, but do not park at its mouth; the next phase flip sends them at you from the other direction. The common beginner mistake is eating the safe pips first and leaving the dead ends for when the board is at its busiest — clear the dead ends and the long straights early, while there are still only two chasers.
05 / FAQ
Maze Muncher FAQ
- How do you play Maze Muncher?
- Steer the muncher around the maze and clear every pip on the floor to finish the level while avoiding the chasers. On a phone, swipe anywhere on the play field to turn and tap to blast; on a desktop, use the arrow keys or WASD and the space bar. A run takes three to five minutes and can be paused at any time.
- What are the rules the chasers follow?
- All four are deterministic, not random. The tracker targets the tile you are standing on, the cutter targets four tiles ahead of you, the flanker targets four tiles behind you, and the drifter chases while more than eight tiles away and retreats to its corner when closer. Each chaser draws a marker on the tile it is aiming at, which is easier to read than the chaser itself.
- When is the best time to use a power cell?
- In this game a power cell is banked instead of triggering on pickup, so the timing is yours. The best moment is when two or more chasers share a corridor ahead of you: one blast that eats four is 200+400+800+1600, or 3000 points, whereas two blasts eating two apiece total only 1200, because the combo ladder resets on every blast.
- Does Maze Muncher work on a phone?
- Yes, and portrait is the primary layout. The default control is a full-field swipe: a short swipe registers a direction, slow swipes count, and you can chain the next direction without lifting your finger. A chip on the control strip switches to an on-screen d-pad with a separate blast key, and the choice survives a refresh.
- How do I reach the later levels?
- Chaser speed reaches its ceiling at level three and stays below yours for the whole run; what grows after that is their number, how short the patrol legs get, and how little time a blast buys you. So late levels are about routing: clear the looped parts of the board when the hunt is on, save the dead corners for a patrol leg, and head for the middle passage when you get cut off. Every 10000 points adds a life up to five, so playing steadily gets you further than chasing points.
